College ???

Does an african american with a 3.5 have a better chance getting into NYU than a caucasian with a 4.0 ?

I'm not for or against this, Im just wondering because I saw it on the news

College ???
It depends. There are a LOT of variables.

First, it depends on the university. I don't know how NYU feels about this, but some universities not only do their admissions by GPA and stats but also by representing the population who applied. In other words... first they'll pick some people with good grades and such, and then they will pick people that will be representative of all the people that applied. They do this for a number reasons. Mostly to vary the university so there's not just one type of personality or person there. Who wants to go to a university with all one race who all volunteered at the shelter, and play water polo.

Second, if the minority person that applies has had a really hard life due to his ethnicity (i.e. prejudiced teachers, low income, etc) they may try to balance everything out to level him or her with the other applicants. Lets face it, it's a cruel world. Sometimes a 3.5 GPA minority that got a C on a paper from a teacher that says "you people"... needs a chance against a 4.0 student that grew up in the suburbs who never had a care in the world.

But, they don't want to admit a minority that just complains about how he or she was so poor and blah blah blah. They want to see someone who triumphs and is using what happened to be a better person and change society's thinking and etc. And they still have to meet the same requirements in prereqs like science, math, english and be involved int he community.

Schools will sometimes do the same for low income people (no matter what race) because they've had it pretty hard too. Sometimes you're not worried about that history assignment when you're worrying about where your next meal is coming from.
Reply:I have no idea. They both probably have a good chance of getting in if they have a high GPA. Most colleges do not discriminate against a race or religion. They want someone responsible and who has good grades.
