College Is Overrated?

How many people here agree that going to college and general higher education is overrated?

I graduated from two CUNY colleges in New York City. My last year as a college student was 1994. I graduated and have two degrees.

However, there are people who NEVER step foot into college and have great paying jobs, success and everything that college students hope to achieve upon graduation.

How many of you agree that college is overrated?

How many of you went to college, graduated many years ago but continue to struggle nonetheless?

College Is Overrated?
It's kind of true that they raise you thinking that college is the magic key that unlocks all doors.

In truth, there is no substitute for persistence and plain old luck.

Morever the idea that college is for EVERYONE is downright absurb. "This is my janitor, Dr. ......" If you are going into a field that doesn't require a degree (real estate, talent agent, etc.) then 4 years of college is a waste of time. But with most white-collar jobs you won't go very far without a college degree.
Reply:It depends on what field you're trying to get into. Many jobs won't even interview you without a college degree. Others rely more on your previous experience and natural talent.

So, if someone knows early on what career they want to pursue, and he/she knows that college will help them less than developing their personal skills in non-academic areas will, then college might be a waste of time for that person.

I, however, am enjoying learning while it lasts. Hopefully having the degree on my resume will help me get interviews and, eventually, jobs... but who knows?
