why do we want to go to famous universities?

Reply:cuz we think that great people came from there and we want to be like them, or that after college we can brag about it...
Reply:I don't. All I care about is "Can I afford it?"

Reply:There are real differences between a famous school like Harvard or Yale and an average-to-good school like UPenn. The students are smarter and more engaged, the teachers are at the top of their fields, and the expectations are higher. True, there is grade inflation, but if you've ever seen an A Lit paper written by a Princeton grad and an A lit paper written by a student going to another school.... you realize that the fact that there's more of a curve at the other school doesn't mean that there isn't grade inflation.





That being said, that's not the reason kids in high school want to go to a famous university - they want to go for the prestige, and for what they hope will be a better safety net for their future.
Reply:Maybe you're in a top high school, so you take good education for granted. There is actually a big difference in low quality schools and the ed. you receive from top schools. You may think that everything is on a same curriculum, but it's not. Also if you grad from a famous university, your job resume will look better. I'd hire a masters from Harvard over a PhD from VA tech anyday.

Reply:That's because a lot of major employers will look at where you went to school in determining how employable you are. It is type of measuring stick. They know very little about you, but they know or have worked with people who went to your school. Respectability and ligitimacy.





When I was doing my internship, one of the attorneys asked me, "Where do you go to school." So I told him. Then he said, "Good, because it help that you come from a school that has been legitimized."





There are some employers who don't care. But, if you can get into a top tier school, why not go there? Also, most famous schools have large endowments. Which also means that they can attract a lot of the best professors. When there are a lot of good professorts, you will attract a lot of students.





Now, lets say you want to go to law school or medical school. Those school also look at where you did you undergraduate work. Was it a top tier school or some easy-to-get-out-of school?





I say, regardless, always shoot for the best schools you can get into. Even if it means getting a larger loan, there is a better chance of doing better in life.

Reply:for our ego and also famous universities generally have high grade averages so it is more likely that you will come out with a better degree. also when you apply for a job it may impress your employer to see what university you studied at
Reply:because they had the best teachers and most graduators from that universities ( like Harvard)had been success and we want to be like them!
Reply:i have no idea. i chose to go to a junior college then transfer to a university. i save about 6 grand each year (way more if i lived on campus), smaller class sizes = more one-on-one help, and focused professors who dont have to worry about getting grant money.





who need yale? harvard? brown? columbia? it meant more a few decades ago to graduate from a private college, but times have changed.
