Yes, I'll say that college can be a waste of time and money for people who might major in something that can't get them a job.
Some people might major in something in the medical field, such as becoming a nurse, a pharmacist, or even major in becoming an architect, or major in finance.
But some people might choose a major that doesn't offer anything and get a degree that's worthless such as an English degree or a History degree because it won't land them a job in that respective field.
I mean, what good is it to go to college, graduate, not find a good paying job, take a low paying job that doesn't require a college education, and have a huge amount of student loans to pay back?
Or what about someone who graduated college and is still getting paid nine dollars an hour and can't find a good paying job and thinks his/her college education and degree are worthless?
What then? Where's the hope when you graduated college two or more years ago and are making what nothing?
College a waste of time?
If college is a waste of time, it's because of the student, not the college. It's a waste when the student doesn't take advantage of all the opportunities college offers.
Also, you pick your major, it's not like the school randomly assigns you one....so if you're so concerned about having a major that has a direct career correlation, well, then pick one. But even with the other majors, you gain skills, and, if you haven't been wasting your time, you've been involved in organizations and activities to flush out your interests so you ARE marketable in whatever field you do want to go to. Yes, it's a tough economy, but if you're having trouble landing a job, it's not the school's fault....and in the very least, if you're having trouble getting a job as a college graduate, then keep in mind that it's even *harder* for those with only a high school diploma to get a job.
If you just showed up to class, partied and slept your way through school, and assumed you would be handed a six-figure salary with your diploma you're mistaken. I have friends with History, English, and other degrees (including a Mythology degree) who have amazing, well-paid jobs....but it's because of *them* making the most of their experience in school.
Reply:Many of the things you say are true if the only aim of a college education is gainful employment. While that is certainly a major, if not the major, consideration, there are other reasons to study something. The history major may be vitally, to him, interested in what went on before. The English major may be fascinated by language and the way it works to transmit knowledge and emotions from one human being to another. To that person, the study of non-salable skills is not a waste of time. I guess it's up to the individual how he spends his time and whether or not it is a waste.
You ever just sit and listen to some music? How much money did that make you? I don't mean to be sarcastic, just underscoring a point.
Reply:You shouldn't go to college just because you want to get a "good job" lots of people create thier own opporunities by starting websites, businesses, and simply by talking to and knowing lots and lots of people with no prior knowledge of anything. It isn't about the "good job" it's about the lifestyle you want to lead and anyone can be successful in that respect. If you want to go to college it's a personal choice, but sometimes there are ways around it which don't put you in debt and ultimately disadvantage you in the long run.
Reply:Yes, college is 100% voluntary and expensive. Colleges assume that the students knows what he or she is doing. Going to college doesnt mean you'll get a job right after graduation.
Reply:I'm in college now and I agree with you- almost all classes are a waste of time. Nonetheless, I don't think I can ever think of moving up the ladder without a major.
Reply:The degree might come in handy later. Most people are experiencing trouble with the job market right now.
Reply:Any kind of education is never a waste of time.....
Reply:I don't think College is a waste of time. Those people who have chosen majors that don't end up getting them anywhere, that's their own fault. People usually think about things before they actually go through with them. People with English and History degrees usually teach and although teaching isn't a high paying job, it's more than 9 dollars an hour. If they don't teach, they write. And if your argument against this is people who pick useless majors love that stuff and it's totally them, well they should minor in it so they can take classes they love but then major in something that's going to get them somewhere. College is only a waste of time to people who make it a waste of their time. It's all about choices. Also, degrees help you most of the time to help you up the ladder.
Reply:Hmm yes this is a touchy subject. My personal opinion is that a lot of companies do not let people into management unless they have a college degree. A lot of them don't care what the degree is in, just need to have one.
I have a degree that is currently rotting in the back of my drawer, but I had a great time in college and wouldn't ever wish that I hadn't gone... it gives you a few extra years of fun before having to join the real world... which usually sucks.
I think the problem is that everyone goes to college so a degree doesn't necessarily make you special anymore- you are on the same level as everyone else.
Don't ask me why people major in things that don't really have a future- I suppose that they can always go back for a year and get their teaching certificate so they can teach English or History to others....

College is the best time of your life, haha?
Alright so I am a 19 year old guy in college. I would really like to know who the moron was that said college is the best time of your life. I can garuntee you its not and if it is I am in for a shitty life, if this is all I have to look forward to. I remember always hearing this growing up and seeing all the movies about how great college is and all this other crap. I was so excited to go to college, well I am now in college almost done with my first year, ya it sucks nothing great about it. I find it is almost as bad as highschool other then I dont have to wake up early ya. So what I want to know is why is college hyped up so much and where did all this crap come from?????
College is the best time of your life, haha?
i agreed with you when I was in first year, I hated lving in dorms it sucked ***, everyone thought they were cool but were spoilt idiot rich kids who thought they were so much better than everyone else.
found my own house, my own friends and was gutted when i finished. if you arent happy, team up with other students who feel the same.
and even if you hate it, you get a qualification in the end.
Reply:Maybe the people who said that are all rich kids living on campus in fraternities and enjoying the awesome parties? But if you have to work and go to school it probably does seem like a lot of problems. Instead you can look forward to graduation and living the single life!
Reply:Um college was awesome for me!... until I moved off campus and realized that I was graduating with 2.80 due to partying and the endless row of coverless bars. You don't have to answer to anyone, you go to class when you want. College is a choice. Why don't you take a semester off?
Reply:supposedly youre away from the rents which gives you more freedom. just finish asap. college is fun in some ways, great parties, but it does suck in alot of ways too. all in all, i would never want to go back to hs though, you grow and learn from college and realize how much more you have to go in life. its definitely a stepping stone and experience people should go through if they wish. but if you have too much fun youll be in collge untill youre 45. good luck. and dont worry, college is fun, trust me youll look back and smile on the good times you had. get out and have some fun on the weekends a little, the time is now to do all the crazyness.
good luck, hope i helped a little
Reply:It is not crap to get a degree and obtain higher knowledge. No one can steal your knowledge from you. Wait til you are finished and see how great your wallet and future will be. Learn as much as you can from good books and great teachers. Stay in college while you can, or you will never get done. You don't want to go back to college when you are 60 y.o and have grandkids. Or still trying to finish college while rearing your own family and children. Youth only comes once in a lifetime. Enjoy it and try to count your blessings. College diploma is not even enough nowadays, MBAs or Masteral Degree get paid really well. You want to be paid based on what you know not on what you can only do physically. Physical labor is harder I tell yah. And you will become older and weaker and no one will hire you then. You think you can live on welfare? You think you'll be happier that way? How about your future family?

Is London College Of Fashion a College or a University?
I am about to finish my time at secondary school/high school, and i havent decided on a college or a 6th form. Im intrested in fashion %26amp; arts and im intrested in this school called " London College Of Fashion", and i am not sure if its a college or a university. I know it sounds dumb, but i just some universities have the word "College" in it and its really confusing. So i was just wondering, Is London College Of Fashion a College or a University?, and if its not, is there any Art or Fashion colleges or sixth form in London?
Thanks.
Is London College Of Fashion a College or a University?
Its classed as a college but better to go with a-levels because people dont 'Generally' go straight after school.
Reply:The London College of Fashion is a constituent college of the University of the Arts - a group of colleges in London specialising in subjects such as art, design, fashion and printing. Some of its courses require A-levels but others don't and there are some courses specifically aimed at 16-18 year olds. Consult its website via this link for further information. Pls note that, if you intend to apply for this year, you need to contact the College quickly.
Reply:Whats the difference of a "college" and "university"???
Thanks.

No of students in a college?
There are two colleges in the town.- college A and college B.there are 500 students more in college A than in college B .The ratio of boys to that of the girls in college A is 3:2 and in college B is 4:1.The ratio of number of science ,humanities and commerce students in college A and college B are respectively 2:5:3 and 2:3:3. The number of commerce students in both the colleges is same. How many students are there in college A.?
No of students in a college?
B + 500 = A
Based on commerce students, 3B/8 = 3A/10
3B/8 = 3(B+500)/10
Cross multiplying,
30B = (8)(3B + 1500)
30B = 24B + 12000
6B =12000
B = 2000
So, there are 2000 students in college B, and B+500 = A = 2500 students in college A.
Reply:2500
With the given data, will have to figure that each college only has 3 programs ... Science, Humanities and Commerce.
They both have the same number of Commerce Students ... Set that to variable "C".
We know that for college A the ratio produces a total student population of
3C+5C+2C
For college B the total student populatio would be
3C+3C+2C
And we know that there are 500 more students in College A.
Therefore
College A = College B+500
3C+5C+2C=3C+3C+2C+500
10C=8C+500
2C=500
C=250. Remember C is the number of commerce students. Pug back into the ratios to get the numbers for each college.
Students At A=2500
Students at B=2000
2500
Reply:Let A = the number of students in college A ∴ A − 500 students = the number of students in college B,
Satisfies “There are 500 students more in college A than in college B.”
“The ratio of number of science, humanities and commerce students in college A and college B are respectively 2:5:3 and 2:3:3. The number of commerce students in both the colleges is same.”
2:5:3, the number of commerce is the same. Assuming that each student only took these three classes 3/(2+5+3) = 0.3 of the students took commerce in college A.
2:3:3, the number of commerce is the same. 3/(2+3+3) = 0.375 of the students took commerce in college A.
0.3A = 0.375(A − 500 students)
0.3A = 0.375A − 187.5 students
0.075A = 187.5 students
A = 2,500 students
Reply:Let students in college A be A and that in college B be B
Then A = B + 500
The statements regarding the ratio of oys and girls is not useful.
Let in college A
number of science be 2x
humanities be 5x
and commerce students be 3x
so in college A number of students = 10x
And
Let in college B
number of science be 2y
humanities be 3y
and commerce students be 3y
so in college A number of students = 8y
But commerce students in both are same
therefore, 3x = 3y
i.e. x = y
A = B + 500
so 10 x = 8y + 500
10 x = 8x + 500 -------as x = y
2 x = 500
x = 250
students in college A = 10x = 2500
and in B = 2500 – 500 = 2000

Writing a college admissions essay?
I'm writing a college admissions essay. The college is not a university and it's not a law school. it's mainly for liberal arts. it's also not a community college. I will be dorming there and only taking core classes (english, math) and going to a community college for a Radiography program because the college does not offer it.
The essay instructions are: "How do you think your educational goals and objectives can be reached by completing your education at Centenary College?"
I would like to know how to go about writing an essay, since I am not majoring in a degree given at THAT college. I guess I would have to write about wanting the college experience but I have no idea how to start it. Please give me ideas.
Writing a college admissions essay?
you can basically just say that you think an eduacation at that school would be helpful to you in broadening your horizons in your basic classes and help you completely decide what you want to go on to do. also mention how living there will help you in developing as an individual. because it is such a broad question you can answer it in the way you would answer it if it were for the college that has your intended major. just dont mention ur intended major by name, and they wont know
hope that helps :)

College in Cananda?
I have heard that going to a Canadian college is less expensive than similar ones in America. Does anybody know where I can find info on Canadian colleges. I am an American high school student who might like to go to a Canadian college. In America www.collegeboard.com is used to research colleges but doesn't include those outside of America. Which Canadian colleges are the best? How is admission determined for American students such as by GPA/SAT scores. How much is a Canadian college degree worth in America?
College in Cananda?
Canadian Colleges may be cheaper to go to than private US colleges but they won't be cheaper to go to than US State Schools.
McGill University, in Montreal, is sometimes called a Canadian Ivy.

College course of Statistics?
I am currently a high school junior and will be taking Elementary Statistics (4 units, 1 semester) at a local city college which is transeferrable to UC according to ASSIST.ORG. I am wondering if this course will help my transcript and GPA (weighted). Say I get an A, will this count as 5.0 in UC's system? To what degree it will help my college app? Also if I finished this course and get credits for it, there is no need for me to take AP Statistics, right?
By the way, how hard is it? I finished pre-calc (honor) and will be taking calc A(H) next semester, contemporary with my college statistics class. Will I be able to handle it? both at the same time? The text that we use for stats is by Triola, Elementary Statistics 10th ed.
I will be taking Physics 1A at that college in summer, will this help my college app also? I plan to take 2 classes and I am thinkg about physics with either english1a or linear algebra. Any suggestions for that? (based on college application)
College course of Statistics?
Generally weighted high school grades mean absolutely nothing at the college level... which is why they are a little pointless. I think the whole weighted system is more to divide honors students from non-honors students at the high school level, and while I'm sure it looks good on a college applications, the grade will only transfer as a good old fashioned A from the college's perspective. It won't count as extra credit hours or anything like that. But you are correct that if you get credit for it, there is no need to retake it as AP. One or the other is fine (although, if it's JUST taken as AP, the credit will count if the test is passed appropriately, but the grade will not contribute to the college GPA at all).
As for how hard it is--I took it as an AP class my senior year in HS, and had a great teacher who made it cake. I didn't take the test though, because I wanted to take it in college and actually get a grade for it. Big mistake! I had a horrible professor, and even though we used the exact same book i used in high school, he made it seem like Greek. I ended up dropping it and retaking it a couple years later, and having to completely re-learn it.
Taking college courses, like I said, looks good on a college application. It shows them that you are already able to handle college courses, and may make you a better candidate for scholarships if your standardized test scores are also good. However, i don't think WHAT you take will have much bearing on your admissions chances. Your best bet would be to decide on a few possible college majors, and see what some of the lower level classes are. Taking random classes, even if they're college classes, won't help you graduate any earlier if they're not the right ones. Luckily, most schools require a core of the same classes to be taken by all students. Find out what these are, and try to take as many of them as possible (usually english, public speaking/communications, religion, a foreign language, etc. depending on the type of college/university you plan to attend).
It sounds like you're off to a great start, and admissions counselors are going to love you. Getting accepted to college isn't as hard as it sounds--they are always willing to take your money!! Decent grades and mediocre test scores will get you admitted to 99% of the colleges in the country. Sorry to tell you that your weighted grades pretty much won't matter, since they will be translated to a 4.0 scale for the admissions process. But keep up the good work!
Reply:Both stats and physics will be good for your college application. I would go with the college course rather than AP. I liked statistics, it's applied math and makes a lot of sense (except I hated validation and reliability). Probability is fascinating and you will use the concepts throughout your life!
Reply:The most classes you take the better.
For the summer i really suggest taking english since that really holds you back in college and also its usually easier to do english at a community than at the university.
Stats is a pretty easy class and doesnt really go past basic algebra so it wont help you much in calculus. Calculus for some is brutal and for others its ok but i rarely hear people have a easy time in calculus.
I am not sure about the GPA conversion for college courses.
Reply:wow, you ask so much question in small thing...it doesnt count as 5.0 in UC. High school and college gpa are separate. You still in high school so its doesnt count as 5.0 for UC, but only college students count. I havent heard anyone can get 5.0 gpa. Yours will be count as credit that you have completed...for more info ask your counselor
