College!!??!!??

Could you please explain the concept of college (what its all about, whats a major got to do with a career and minor, you know everything about it)

Thanxx

College!!??!!??
Wow, college is a little complicated to explain, but I'm trying get to the gist of it.

Basically, some people try to set off on their own after they've completed high school. These people are able to branch out. and be individuals. They're also able to support themselves and deal with whatever life gives them based on having only a high school education. However, some of the drawbacks of going to just high school is that a lot of employers want people with more than just a high school degree, some employers only allow certain people with a bachelor's degree (bachelor's degree basically means you graduated college) or higher to have certain jobs, and companies generally pay more to people with a college degree or higher.

For example, if you wanted to be a manager at Best Buy you could make $15 an hour, (but a college degree may be the requirement for the job) other than an associate who makes $8.25 an hour, but only has a high school degree.

Generally, education is very valued in this world, and you have a lot more opportunities in life with an education so most of us try and go off to college to better ourselves. College isn't all about money. While going to college people can participate in groups and clubs to learn how to socialize and work with people. You're also supposed to grow up more individually when you're at college since you may stay in a dorm room, which gives you an opportunity to live away from your home and parents. You also learn how to budget your time and prioritize since you have no harsh supervisors/teachers. No one tells you to when to study, when to go to class, or do what you're supposed to do; it's all basically your responsibility. College is also known as that time when you have to make that general leap from a kid/teenager to an adult.

Now the other stuff; a major is basically a subject that a college allows you to study in while you work towards getting a degree to graduate. For example, you can major in chemistry, math, art, music. (Most colleges have a list of majors).

Minors are subjects on the side that you can also learn while you focus on a main course. Another example, let's say you really want to do music at college, but you also have an interest in art then you can major in music and minor in art.

Careers are basically certain paths that you're supposed to take with your life. I.e, if you love art, then maybe you want to become an artist or start an art gallery or work in an museum, art shows, etc.
Reply:College experience is to help you choose what you want to do in life. The U.S. college education is broadly oriented, which means that you get to learn a lot of different stuff (sometimes they call this, the "core" requirements or general education). If you happen to like a specific field, you choose a major and you get to take a lot of courses in this major. Hopefully, you will be able to learn something and to do a job (and find a job) after you graduate. A minor is something that you are interested in but you do not really want to be an expert at. It is more of "nice to know" stuff but you do not see it as important as your major.

Sometimes people choose painting or dance as their major. It is great and easy to get all As, I guess. But the question is, can you make a decent living out of it? Can you do a job after you graduate? What about the competition in the industry? It is easier to find a job with a decent salary if you pick something more practical, e.g. engineering, computer science, etc. But if you don't like it or suck at it, well, you can always find alternatives. I remember when I chose a major, I factored in the income potentials to my decision. I also picked the easy ones to graduate. Since to me, comp sci and math are easier to tolerate, I picked them out. So, as a result, the money has been great so far.
Reply:Well learning is just one aspect of college; it’s a life experience and one that you'll never forget. If you have the means and willingness to be totally stressed one minute then have a complete blast the next I highly recommend it.

Picking a major is the hardest decision most people encounter while in college. If you’re lucky enough to know what you want to do with your life then it's an easy decision. Although sometimes you think you know what you want, but then when you start going through the courses for your major you realize its not what you want to do (I was one of those). What I found unless you want to be something really specialized (doctor, lawyer) it’s really just come down to you having that piece of paper (diploma) that opens up more doors for a future career. Look I have friends who were art majors and they're working in IT and history major working in sales for a Fortune 10 company (both doing very well).

In the end college is hard to describe; you meet new people, you learn about yourself (both good and bad), and you open your mind to new ideas and different ways of thinking. You just got to try it. Oh yeah even if you don't know what you want to do you typically don't have to declare a major until after your second year in.

Good luck!
